What is hematite?

About 2.5 billion years ago, Earth's oceans were rich in dissolved iron, but almost no free oxygen was present in the water. Then a group of cyanobacteria became capable of photosynthesis. The bacteria used sunlight as an energy source to convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates, oxygen, and water. This reaction released abundant free oxygen into the ocean environment.

The new oxygen immediately combined with the iron to form hematite, which sank to the bottom on the seafloor and became the rock units that we know today as the banked iron formations.

These deposits continued for hundreds of millions of years - 2.4 to 1.8 million years ago. This allowed the formation of iron deposits hundreds to several thousand feet thick, that are laterally persistent over hundreds to thousands of square miles. Many of these sedimentary iron deposits contain lodestone hematite as well as other iron minerals. The iron ore is mined, crushed, and processed to recover the hematite.

Although hematite was once mined at thousands of locations around the world, today almost all of the production comes from a few dozen large deposits where significant equipment investment is required for companies to efficiently mine and process the ore - including the United States and Canada.

What is magnetic hematite?

Processed [recovered] lodestone hematite is magnetized to add the healing benefits of magnetic energy. Magnetic hematite is formed from finely powdered iron oxide [hematite] and heated until it granulates. During this process a strong magnetic field is applied to the material so that the molecular poles line up to form a permanent magnet. Then it is cut into shapes and polished to create magnetic hematite.

What does Gauss [rhythms with house] mean?

In 1832, the German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss defined the earth's magnetic field using units of millimeters, grams, and second. He showed that the Earth's magnetic field can be defined using purely mathematical dimensions. Consequently, magnetic fields and magnets are measured by an electro-magnetic unit called Gauss.

Regular strength magnets rate between 600 - 800 external gauss. Medical strength permanent magnets require a higher gauss rating to penetrate skin and tissue. More magnets in a product means that the magnets are spaced closer together, creating a more uniform field.
